Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments should be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
