Whenever a major honors show nears, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
