The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the country for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the idea of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple face the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
